Why mohair?

Mohair is the fiber of the Angora goat. Not Angora rabbit: that's a different wool. A fiber known for insulating against the cold while remaining lightweight, as the Mohair on Wikipedia page reminds us. South Africa is the world's leading producer.

Mohair South Africa, the South African industry organization, highlights another quality that interested us: mohair takes dye very well and retains bright colors over time. For a color-block sweater, that's exactly what you need. We didn't want a turquoise that turns gray after three washes.

Turquoise, purple, pink: unapologetic color-block

The design comes from retro track jackets: V-shaped stripes that start at the shoulders and meet at the zip. Three bold colors, no gradient, no extra patterns. The kind of vintage sweater you look for in thrift stores without ever finding the right size. Here, the knit is new and the cut is designed for today: dropped shoulders, ample volume, ribbed hem that holds its shape.

Zipped sweater or zipped cardigan? Both

Zipped up to the chin, it's a zipped collar sweater that cuts the wind. Open over a t-shirt, it can be worn as a zipped cardigan. One piece, two looks, depending on the weather or the time of day. That's what makes it easy to wear, despite its colors.

In our photos, it is worn over a white t-shirt, with wide ecru trousers and running sneakers. The rule: the color is already in the sweater, the rest of the outfit remains neutral. Same piece, women's cut. With wide ecru jeans and sneakers, zipped up to the collar on windy days, open the rest of the time. It replaces the coat on transitional days and goes under a long jacket when it freezes. For underneath, choose from our women's basic t-shirts.

Which size to choose?

The volume is already in the cut: take your usual size. The measurements are on the product page and in our size guide. If you like very oversized, we explain how to balance oversized without drowning in the right oversized cut.

Does mohair itch?

That's the question we get asked the most. Mohair has a long fiber and a little fuzz on the surface: sensitive skin feels it more than cotton. The solution is simple, and that's how we wear it in our photos: a cotton t-shirt underneath. The sweater stays on the t-shirt, not on the skin.

How to wash a mohair sweater

First follow the label. For a mohair knit, the right reflexes:

• hand wash in cold water, or machine wool program, at low temperature;
• special wool detergent, without fabric softener;
• no strong spinning: press the water out in a towel, without twisting;
• dry flat, never on a hanger or in the dryer;
• store folded, not hung, so the knit doesn't stretch.
